Happy Hour with Dr. Julie Armstrong
St. Petersburg – Racism and Civil Rights are topics not likely discussed in social circles in St. Petersburg, but Dr. Julie Armstrong engages the topic head on as the St. Petersburg Museum of History kicks off the 2014 season of Happy Hour with the Historian on Thursday, January 9, 2014.
For a state that grew by welcoming northern Americans with open arms – Florida’s history of racism and racial violence is a checkered one. A record number of past lynchings are proof. But despite the Sunshine State’s past, it currently acts as a model for others in reconciliation and healing efforts.
Dr. Armstrong will describe how a national effort, led primarily by Florida scholars and activists, is strategizing ways of using the digital humanities to mark, educate, and commemorate acts of racial violence state- and nation-wide.
Dr. Armstrong is an Associate Professor of English at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. She is an accomplished author and editor, predominantly focused on the history of civil rights in the South.
Presented by RBC Wealth Management – A Green, Henwood and Hough Investment Group, the event begins at 6:30 and Dr. Armstrong is scheduled to speak at 7pm. The event features a full cocktail bar and a tasty sampling of food from Jimbo’s Joint restaurant. Admission is a $5 suggested donation and includes viewing of the museum.
