The St. Petersburg City Theatre

An Exhibit 90 Years in the Making

The Sunshine Players morphed into The Players Club and remained anStPeteCityTheatre informal group until, in the little theatre craze that crossed the nation in  the 1930’s, the group organized formally and became St. Petersburg Little Theatre, their name until 2011 when it was changed to reflect a history as the first organized theatre group in St. Petersburg. The first live theatre to have its own brick and mortar home, opened in 1944 at 1950 2nd Avenue North, St. Petersburg, with the play “Liliom,” later to become the hit musical “Carousel.”

Now celebrating their 90 anniversary, St. Petersburg City Theatre is the “oldest continuously operating community theatre” in Florida.
