From Seminary to Seminoles

On May 17, 1991, the Tampa Bay Storm opened their first training camp at the Florida Suncoast Dome (today’s Tropicana Field) after relocating from Pittsburgh. Under head coach Fran Curci, the team began preparing for its first season in the Arena Football League.
Arena football brought a different style of play than the NFL, using a smaller indoor field, rebound nets, and a faster, high-scoring pace that put a premium on quick decision-making and agility.
That same day, quarterback Jay Gruden returned to the roster. His leadership helped set the tone for a strong debut year, and his playmaking quickly became central to the Storm’s identity. The 1991 squad went on to win ArenaBowl V, marking a remarkable first season for a team that had only just arrived in the Tampa Bay area.
The Storm’s early success cemented their place in local sports history and introduced many Floridians to the fast, indoor version of the game. It also signaled the start of a long and passionate fan base that supported the team for more than two decades.
