Happy Hour with the Historian – Andrew Jackson: From the Battle of New Orleans to the Invasion of Florida
June 8, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The Museum of History and Southern Roots Realty invite you to join us Thursday, June 8 for Happy Hour with the Historian!
Celebrated author and historian Robert Jacob shares the mysteries of how Florida played a crucial role in the early life of Andrew Jackson. Jackson became a national hero after defeating the British in the Battle of New Orleans – even though the battle took place two weeks after the War of 1812 ended.
In 1818 Jackson was ordered by President Madison to protect our southern border from the Spanish, but “Old Hickory” invaded Spanish West Florida and captured Pensacola after it was learned the Seminoles were hiding runaway slaves.
The Adams-Onís Treaty was signed on February 22, 1819, ceding East and West Florida to the United States and Jackson’s career as a government official begins.
