Special Edition Happy Hour with the Historian – Making of a Racist

July 19, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The St. Petersburg Museum of History and Southern Roots Realty invites you to this month’s lecture series, Special Edition: Happy Hour with the Historian featuring Dr. Charles B. Dew Wednesday, July 19th.

Dr. Charles B. Dew is a native of St. Petersburg who grew up in the Jim Crow era of the 1940s & 50s South. Dew’s talk will center around his latest book, The Making of a Racist: A Southerner Reflects on Family, History, and the Slave Trade. In this powerful memoir, Dew, one of America’s most respected historians of the South, turns the focus on his own life which began in a society unequivocally committed to segregation. Dew graduated summa cum laude with Honors in History from Williams College in 1958, followed by a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. His 43-year teaching career at Williams focused on the American South, the Civil War, and the institution of slavery.
