His collection of stories  complicates and sometimes challenges how Americans view their past. His discussion\, and book\, dig deeper into Hispanic and Caribbean history\, and how Spanish colonialism in Florida sparked the British’s plans for colonization of the continent and influenced some of the most enduring traditions of the larger Southeast.  \nDr. Kokomoor is a fourth-generation Floridian who grew up in the Tampa Bay area. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s Degrees in History at the University of South Florida and his Doctorate in Early American History at Florida State University. DESCRIPTION:The St. Petersburg Museum of History and Southern Roots Realty invite you to join us Nov. 9 for Happy Hour with the Historian! \nAuthor Pia Jordan will introduce and discuss her book\, Memories of a Tuskegee Airmen Nurse and Her Military Sisters. \nA scrapbook can tell much about a person’s life. Memories of a Tuskegee Airmen Nurse shares the World War II stories of when 28 women from the Army Nurse Corps staffed the hospital on the base where the Tuskegee Airmen were undergoing basic training. \nThese women were African American\, registered nurses\, and lieutenants in the U.S. Army Air Corps. \nPia’s mother was one of these Army officers\, and although her mother did not speak much of that time\, her Tuskegee Army Flying School scrapbook tells a much more detailed story. \nLike the famed pilots\, the nurses had to fight racial discrimination\, but also faced gender bias. \nA retired professor at the School of Global Journalism at Morgan State University\, Pia Jordan is the project director of the Tuskegee Army Nurses Project. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, December 8th as the Museum of History and UPC Insurance welcome Niles Laughner and his presentation on “The Vinoy: From a Wager to a Waterfront Jewel.” \nNiles James Laughner is a native Floridian\, born in St. Petersburg in 1963 with family roots stretching to New Hampshire\, Pittsburgh and beyond.  He is the grandson of hotel builder and developer  Aymer Vinoy Laughner I\, and is a graduate of Pennsylvania’s Grove City College where he earned a  degree in History and Economics. An antique dealer since 1987\, he specializes in military antiques and historical Americana.  He is also a writer\, having had articles published in journals in the US and UK\, focusing on what the UK’s Military History Monthly magazine described as “the intersection of military and social history”. Additionally\, he was featured for several years on Pittsburgh’s Hidden Treasures\, a PBS roadshow event. Sanderson serves as the Associate Director of La Florida: The Interactive Digital Archive of the Americas\, a position she has held since the project’s inception in 2016. She earned a BFA from the University of Tampa and a BA in History from the University of South Florida\, St. Petersburg. In 2017\, Sanderson graduated with an MLA in Florida Studies from the USFSP. Her thesis project focused on the lives of two noble women in sixteenth-century Florida\, one a young Spanish woman and one a female Indian chief. Sanderson has presented her research at several national conferences. After working in the field for five years\, Sanderson was admitted into the Ph.D. program in History at the University of South Florida. In her first year in the doctoral program\, Sanderson was one of just eight graduate students selected to participate in the prestigious Spanish Colonial Borderlands workshop\, sponsored by The Huntington Library in San Marino\, California. In 2022\, Sanderson received the Leland Hawes Essay prize for the best paper in Florida studies. \nTeaching La Florida with the Interactive Digital Archive of the Americas will highlight the ways in which rigorous academic research in collaboration with cutting-edge technology can bring the history of daily life in colonial Florida to a global audience. \nThe presentation will focus on an initiative titled\, Lost Voices from America’s Oldest Parish Archive\, 1594-1821\, a project designed to make St. Augustine’s diocesan archives accessible to a global audience. Together\, these ecclesiastical records provide unparalleled insight into the daily lives of colonial St. Augustine’s multi-ethnic inhabitants\, and the relationships between the settlement’s African\, European\, and Native American residents. The collaborative two-year project is designed to engage a global audience\, specialists and non-specialists alike. He has participated in activities covering a wide range of time periods including French and Indian War and Revolutionary War reenactments\, Western Gun Fighter groups\, Mountain Man Rendezvous\, and Renaissance Fairs. During the past 16 years he has focused on the golden age of piracy.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOriginally from Pittsburgh\, PA\, Robert graduated from Duquesne University with a Bachelor’s Degree in education in 1978. He taught in the West Point public school district\, West Point\, VA for five years while completing his Master’s Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1983.\n  \nIn 1982\, Robert entered the United States Marine Corps reserve and augmented to active duty in 1983. During his service\, he became a military occupational specialty instructor and earned the designation of Master Training Specialist. Later in his career\, he became the Commanding Officer of the Marine Detachment at the same school where he had earlier instructed. He achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5 and retired after 31 years of service in 2013.\n\nWhile researching information on the golden age of piracy\, Robert realized that most of the publications on the subject were contradictory and even incorrect. This motivated him to write his first award-winning publication\, A Pirate’s Life in the Golden Age of Piracy. After its release\, his readers expressed a strong interest in Florida pirates. This inspired Robert to write his second book that focused on the them\, Pirates of the Florida Coast: Truths\, Legends\, and Myths. Robert is currently a living historian\, author\, lecturer\, and public speaker. He has appeared as a subject matter expert on pirates at museums\, historical events\, educational institutions\, and on the History Channel.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by UPC Insurance\, Happy Hour with the Historian is frequently sold out\, so reservations are required. DESCRIPTION:Join the St. Petersburg Museum of History on Thursday\, May 12 as the museum\, UPC Insurance and Florida Humanities welcomes Dr. Gary Mormino and his presentation\, “Dreams in the New Century: Instant Cities\, Shattered Hopes and Florida’s Turning Point\,” with a special book signing. \nGary Mormino is an author of a wide range of academic and popular books. Immigrants on the Hill (University of Illinois press\, 1986) won the Howard Marraro Prize as the outstanding book in Italian history. The Immigrant World of Ybor City (University of Illinois Press\, 1987) received the Theodore Saloutos Prize for the outstanding book in ethnic-immigration history. In addition\, two of his articles have received prizes for the best writing in Florida history. He has written for the St. Petersburg Times\, Orlando Sentinel\, and Miami Herald. \nAlmost two decades ago\, Mormino began to research a social history of modern Florida. Land of Sunshine\, State of Dreams: A Social History of Modern Florida was published in the spring of 2005 by the University Press of Florida. Readers have called it a seminal study in state history. In 2006\, the Florida Historical Society awarded the book the Charlton Tebeau Prize. Dr. Mormino received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina and has taught at USF since 1977. In 2003\,  Florida Humanities named him its first Humanist of the Year.

For the past 8 years\, she has enjoyed being an “accidental first lady” of St. Petersburg\, Florida. Historical dramas\, traveling\, scratch cooking\, drinking wine\, daily walks\, and long bike rides on the Pinellas Trail fill any free time. \nPlease note that seating is no longer pre-assigned\, so if you have specfic seating preferences\, you should arrive at 6PM in order to select it. We will have cards that you can write your name on to save your chosen seat while you chat and wait for wine.       \nPresented by UPC Insurance\, Happy Hour with the Historian is frequently sold out\, so reservations are required. Admission without a reservation cannot be guaranteed. Reservations close the day of the event.
