Hidden behind the mangroves is a land that housed a native culture hundreds of years before the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500s. \nJoin us on Thursday\, July 10 for Happy Happy with the Historian as Dr. Kendall Jackson presents Weedon Island: Gateway to the Past. \nDr. Jackson will discuss how in the 1920s researchers from the Smithsonian excavated the area\, focusing on a burial mound. They discovered pottery that can be traced throughout the Southeast\, from southwestern Georgia and Alabama to the Weedon Island Preserve. \nDr. Kendall Jackson is an archaeologist at AWIARE and is a post-doctoral fellow in the School of Geosciences at the University of South Florida. His research is focused on the deep history of Tampa Bay\, including the evolution of the estuary system over the past 10\,000 years\, Indigenous cultures and land use systems\, and the rapid transformation of the region across the 19th and 20th centuries. \nHappy Hour with the Historian is presented by Southern Roots Realty. DESCRIPTION:The St. Petersburg Museum of History has partnered with the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center on the St. Pete Pier to present the City’s first Historic Boat Tour! \nJoin us on April 12th\, for the 2-hour monthly tour that will highlight the city’s waterfront history and land alterations that have shaped St. Petersburg’s downtown shoreline and culture over time. \nDiscover the history of St. Petersburg from the water – the good\, the bad\, and the funny. Join us to find out how a cast of colorful characters turned a sleepy fishing village into a world-famous tourist destination\, and learn what happened to the Tampa Bay ecosystem as a result. It’s the perfect blend of history\, science\, and beautiful waterfront views. \nThe tour will depart from the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center Eco-Tour dock across from the Museum of History in the City Marina at 10am and will travel along the waterfront from Snell Isle to Coquina Key. \nTickets are $40 for Museum Members and $45 for not-yet members.
