SUMMARY:Happy Hour with the Historian: What in the world? How Walt Built Disney
DESCRIPTION:The St. Petersburg Museum of History and Southern Roots Realty invite you to our monthly lecture series\, Happy Hour with the Historian featuring Gary McKechnie. The deal that changed Florida forever. \nWhen Walt Disney realized cheap tourist traps were enveloping Disneyland\, he began a nationwide search for enough land to hold every dream he could imagine. What happened next would require a heightened degree of CIA-level secrecy for Disney’s undercover team\, who launched a misinformation campaign that included dummy corporations and secret transactions. However\, when a keen-eyed reporter cracked the code\, Disney was forced to show his hand. Audiences will be amazed to learn of not only subterfuge but also the monumental innovations and engineering feats required creating a whole new world. \nNative Floridian Gary McKechnie is a two-time National Geographic author\, author of America’s best-selling motorcycle guidebook\, and two-time winner of the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award.  McKechnie is also a motivational storyteller\, a stand-up comedian\, and improv actor. He is also a guest speaker aboard the ships of Cunard\, Seabourn\, and the Silversea lines.  \n\n\n\nPresented by Southern Roots Realty\, Happy Hour with the Historian is frequently sold out\, so reservations are required. Admission without a reservation cannot be guaranteed. Reservations close the day of the event.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMembers: $5 | Not-yet-members: $10\nCash bar provided.\nDoors open at 6pm. SUMMARY:Happy Hour with the Historian: Memories of a Tuskegee Airmen Nurse
DESCRIPTION:The St. Petersburg Museum of History and Southern Roots Realty invite you to join us Nov. 9 for Happy Hour with the Historian! \nAuthor Pia Jordan will introduce and discuss her book\, Memories of a Tuskegee Airmen Nurse and Her Military Sisters. \nA scrapbook can tell much about a person’s life. Memories of a Tuskegee Airmen Nurse shares the World War II stories of when 28 women from the Army Nurse Corps staffed the hospital on the base where the Tuskegee Airmen were undergoing basic training. \nThese women were African American\, registered nurses\, and lieutenants in the U.S. Army Air Corps. \nPia’s mother was one of these Army officers\, and although her mother did not speak much of that time\, her Tuskegee Army Flying School scrapbook tells a much more detailed story. \nLike the famed pilots\, the nurses had to fight racial discrimination\, but also faced gender bias. \nA retired professor at the School of Global Journalism at Morgan State University\, Pia Jordan is the project director of the Tuskegee Army Nurses Project. She currently lives in St. Petersburg. Program begins at 6:30pm.\nSeating is limited\, reserve your seats today! \nRegister Now\n \nNOTE: Seat assignments are not pre-assigned.
