How Citrus Juiced Florida’s Identity
April 20, 2026On April 22, 1994, former President Richard Nixon died at the age of 81 following a stroke. He passed away in New York City four days after suffering the stroke at his New Jersey home.

President Bill Clinton declared a national day of mourning, marking the passing of one of the most complex and consequential figures in American history. Nixon was later laid to rest beside his wife, Pat, who had died the year before in June 1993.
More than two decades earlier, Nixon and Pat made a notable stop in St. Petersburg. On October 28, 1970, the president visited the city as part of a campaign tour supporting Republican candidates across Florida.
He spoke before a large crowd at the Bayfront Center Arena, drawing significant local attention. The visit marked the first time a sitting U.S. president had come to St. Petersburg, placing the city briefly at the center of the national political stage.
