From Shacks to Streets: A Pioneer’s Memories of Early Pinellas
April 10, 2026On April 10, 2023, the Tampa Bay Rays edged the Boston Red Sox 1–0, pushing their record to a perfect 10–0 and putting themselves in rare company. No team had opened a season with ten straight wins since the 1987 Milwaukee Brewers, and the Rays managed it with the kind of tight, low-scoring game that keeps fans on edge from first pitch to last.

The only run of the night came in the eighth inning, when Brandon Lowe (pictured) sent a solo home run into the right-field seats. It was just enough. Boston’s reliever Chris Martin took the loss, and Tampa Bay held on to secure the milestone win.
That victory didn’t just keep the streak alive. It helped fuel one of the most exciting season openings in recent baseball history. The Rays went on to start the year 13–0, tying the marks set by the Atlanta Braves and the 1987 Brewers for the best modern-era start.
