The Poor Nut and a New Beginning
May 8, 2026
On Mother’s Day, 2026, the Museum of History is celebrating Sarah Williams, known as the “Mother of St. Petersburg,” whose quiet determination helped shape the future of St. Petersburg.
As the wife of Gen. John C. Williams, she played a key role in smoothing the agreement with the Orange Belt Railroad, a deal that ultimately led to the city’s founding.
After John’s death, Sarah managed extensive landholdings, created streets, platted new subdivisions, and gifted parcels for public use. She later married Capt. James Armistead, continuing to guide both estates with the same steady hand.
A founder of the Woman’s Town Improvement Association and a leader in local civic life, Sarah truly earned her title as the “Mother of St. Petersburg.”
