Building Panama City Beach: Bridges, Hotels and Big Ideas
May 1, 2026On May 4, 1992, a new landmark splashed its way into Florida history when Splash Mountain opened at Magic Kingdom. The log-flume attraction quickly became one of the park’s signature experiences, mixing a meandering river ride with a steep drop that sent visitors sailing into a spray of Florida sunshine.
Built on a sprawling footprint in Frontierland, the attraction blended animatronics, music, and storytelling at a scale that wasn’t common in theme parks at the time.

Splash Mountain drew huge crowds throughout the 1990s and 2000s, becoming a rite of passage for generations of visitors. For many families, it was the first “big” ride they braved together, and its catchy soundtrack played endlessly in the park and well beyond it. Its towering façade even reshaped the Magic Kingdom skyline, visible from riverboats, bridges, and walkways across the park.
After a three-decade run, Splash Mountain closed in 2023 as the park shifted to a new storyline and reimagined design. But for more than 30 years, May 4th marked the birth of one of Florida’s most beloved and memorable theme-park rides.
