The St. Petersburg Yacht Club took an important step in its history when its articles of incorporation were filed with the county clerk on June 23, 1916. The milestone formalized an organization that had begun seven years earlier when a group of local boating enthusiasts came together to celebrate their shared love of life on the water.
Founded in 1909, the club’s first outing attracted nearly 100 members and guests aboard 20 boats, an impressive turnout in a city of only about 4,000 residents. Following incorporation, the club continued to grow, opening its first clubhouse in 1917 at Bayshore Drive and Central Avenue. Designed by architect George W. Stewart in the Spanish Mission style, the building became a gathering place for both recreational boating and social events.
Beyond sailing, members enjoyed dances, dinners, card games, and community activities. The club also helped establish St. Petersburg as a center for competitive sailing, including the famous St. Petersburg to Havana Yacht Race, first organized in 1930.
More than a century later, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club remains an enduring part of the city’s maritime heritage.
