Happy Hour with the Historian – Skyway: The True Story of Tampa Bay’s Signature Bridge and the Man Who Brought it Down
On a dark, stormy morning on May 9, 1980, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge – an engineering marvel – was struck by a ship. The southbound span collapsed into Tampa Bay and moments later cars and a Greyhound bus drove off the broken bridge, falling into the water below. Thirty-five people lost their lives.
The St. Petersburg Museum of History and Southern Roots Realty invite you to Happy Hour with the Historian featuring author and historian Bill DeYoung and his story of the Skyway and the man who brought it down.
After a 35-year career with Florida newspapers, DeYoung is now a senior writer and editor for the St. Pete Catalyst. DeYoung has also authored “Skyway: The True Story of Tampa Bay’s Signature Bridge and the Man Who Brought it Down” (University Press of Florida, 2013), “Phil Gernhard Record Man” (University Press of Florida, 2018), “I Need to Know: The Lost Music Interviews” (St. Petersburg Press, 2019) and “Vintage St. Pete: The Golden Age of Tourism.”
